AutoCAD floor plan with AI: from a sketch to a dimensioned drawing

You have a sketch of a plan with its dimensions written on it, and no CAD file. Here is an AI assistant drawing it in your open AutoCAD drawing through AEC Pilot: walls, doors, windows, rooms, real dimensions and a sheet, then checking its own drawing against the sketch.

Why redrawing a sketch is worth handing over

Turning a sketch into a clean DWG is careful, repetitive work:

  • Reading it: every dimension, every opening, which wall is outer and which is inner.
  • Drawing it: walls with their thickness, doors with their swing, windows, room names and areas, each on its layer.
  • Checking it: dimensions that measure the drawing, not text typed over it, and a sheet that matches the sketch.

Reading an image is something your AI client already does. AEC Pilot adds the other half: real drawing actions inside AutoCAD, so the result is an editable DWG, not a picture of one.

What the assistant can do in AutoCAD

  • Layers: created with their colours and line types, set current, frozen or merged.
  • Geometry: lines, polylines, rectangles, arcs and hatches, then moved, copied, offset, mirrored or arrayed.
  • Text and dimensions: text and multiline text, and linear, aligned, angular and radial dimensions that measure the drawing.
  • Blocks: created, inserted at real size, their attributes read and set.
  • Sheets: layouts, viewports at a scale, and a plot to PDF the assistant can look at to check its own work.

For anything the actions do not cover, the assistant can write and run C# against the AutoCAD API on the open drawing.

A worked example: a sketch to an A3 sheet

The sketch is an 11.00 × 8.00 m plan with five rooms, made for this demo so there is a true answer to check against. AutoCAD is open with an empty drawing, and one request:

“Draw this sketch as a real floor plan at true scale, on proper layers, in stages. Then plot it and compare it with the sketch.”

The assistant crops the sketch into eight parts to read every dimension, then builds the plan in three stages, test-plotting each one:

  • Walls with their thickness and a solid fill.
  • Doors with their swings, and the windows.
  • Room names with their areas, 76.79 m² net in total, and the dimensions.

It lays out an A3 sheet at 1:50 with a title block, plots it and compares it with the sketch: all 31 dimensions measure exactly the values on the sketch. A second request, “furnish it at real sizes”, adds beds, sofa, table, kitchen and bathroom as blocks, clear of the door swings, the room labels and the dimensions.

Click a dimension and it is a real AutoCAD dimension; click a bed and it is a block at 1600 × 2000. Everything sits on its own layer, ready to edit.

What to check before you use it

  • A readable sketch. The drawing can only be as right as the dimensions the assistant can read; unclear numbers should be written out.
  • Openings and intent. A gap without a door, or a wall that is not drawn, is easiest to get right when the sketch or the request says so.
  • A look at the plot. Ask for the PDF comparison, as in the example, and look at it yourself before the drawing goes out.

Setting it up

  • AutoCAD 2021 to 2027 (not LT), set up by the AEC Pilot installer; free for 14 days.
  • Connect Claude, ChatGPT / Codex, Cursor or Google Antigravity over MCP in one click from Settings → Setup Guide; the AutoCAD tools come with the aec-cad server. Use a client that can read images for a sketch.
  • Or use Pilot Chat, docked inside AutoCAD, with your own API key.

Requests to try

  • “Create layers A-WALL, A-DOOR, A-GLAZ, A-ANNO and A-DIMS with sensible colours.”
  • “Draw a 25 cm outer wall around an 11 × 8 m rectangle and fill it solid.”
  • “Dimension every wall and opening on the A-DIMS layer.”
  • “Write each room’s name and area in its centre.”
  • “Set up an A3 sheet at 1:50 and plot it to PDF.”
  • “Furnish the bedrooms at real sizes, clear of the door swings.”

Frequently asked questions

Can AI draw a floor plan in AutoCAD?

Yes, with AEC Pilot. The assistant draws walls, doors, windows, rooms, dimensions and sheets as real AutoCAD objects in your open drawing, on layers you can keep editing.

Can it turn a sketch or a photo into a DWG?

Yes, if your AI client can read images: it reads the dimensions from the sketch and draws the plan at true scale. In our example all 31 dimensions matched the sketch.

Are the dimensions real dimension objects?

Yes. They are AutoCAD dimensions that measure the drawing, not text typed in place, so they update when the geometry changes.

Which AutoCAD versions are supported?

AutoCAD 2021 to 2027, and Civil 3D and Advance Steel from the same installer. AutoCAD LT does not load add-ins.

Does my drawing leave my PC?

No. Everything runs on your machine, the MCP server listens on localhost only, and your drawings are never uploaded to AEC Pilot. Your AI client sees the answers to what you ask.

Which AI assistants work with AutoCAD?

Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT / Codex, Cursor and Google Antigravity over MCP, or Pilot Chat inside AutoCAD with your own API key. AEC Pilot adds no AI fee.
