3ds Max MCP: build, light and render a scene by asking
Ask, and it builds the scene. AI inside Autodesk 3ds Max with 28 real actions — objects, cameras and lights, modifiers and materials, FBX, OBJ, USD and glTF, and rendering. Everything runs on your machine.
The scene, read and edited in words
It starts with a picture of the scene — objects, layers, units, renderer — then lists, selects and changes what you point at:
- Create primitives, target cameras and omni, spot, directional or photometric lights.
- Move, rotate, scale and recolour objects.
- Read the modifier stack and add Bend, Shell, TurboSmooth and more.
- List materials, or create and assign Physical or Standard ones.
Deleting is by name only, and 3ds Max’s undo brings it back.
Files in and out
Open, save and reset .max files; import FBX, OBJ, DWG, USD, Alembic and more; export FBX, OBJ, USD, glTF, Alembic, DWG or STL. From Revit to a web viewer — without an export dialog.
See it, then render it
The assistant captures the viewport and checks its own work. When the scene is right, it renders a still with the current renderer.
Renders, big files and long scripts run as background jobs, so nothing times out.
MAXScript, behind your approval
When no action fits, it writes MAXScript — shown to you and approved before it runs, and the code tool can be switched off. 3ds Max’s Safe Scene Script Execution stays on.
Two ways to use it
Inside 3ds Max. Pilot Chat, docked from the AEC Pilot menu. Attach the view, the selection or a scene check to your question.
From your own LLM. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Antigravity over MCP — one click, nothing else to install. Local only, and off until you turn it on.
Also on Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Inventor or Robot? One licence covers them all.
What you can ask
- “What’s in this scene, and which objects have no material?”
- “Import this FBX, list what came in and put everything on a layer called Imported.”
- “Add a camera looking at the entrance from eye level and a directional light for the sun.”
- “Give the glass a transparent Physical material and take a viewport screenshot.”
- “Render the current camera view.”
- “Export the selection to glTF for the web viewer.”
Frequently asked questions
Can I use AI in 3ds Max?
Yes, two ways: Pilot Chat docked inside 3ds Max, or your own assistant over MCP. Either way it builds, edits, imports, exports and renders — locally.
Is there an MCP server for 3ds Max?
Yes — AEC Pilot runs one inside 3ds Max 2024–2027, with 28 actions and one-click setup for Claude, ChatGPT / Codex, Cursor or Antigravity.
Which 3ds Max versions are supported?
3ds Max 2024–2027. The bundle loads the right build for each release.
Can it run MAXScript?
Yes, when no action fits. Pilot Chat shows the script and asks first; Safe Scene Script Execution stays on, and you can turn the code tool off.
Does it render?
Yes — a still with the current renderer, as a background job. For a quick look, the viewport capture is instant.
Does my scene leave my computer?
No. Everything runs on your machine and the MCP server listens on localhost only. Your scenes are never uploaded.
How does it connect to Claude?
One click: pick Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT / Codex, Cursor or Antigravity and AEC Pilot writes the connection, keeping your other MCP servers. Or skip it and use Pilot Chat, docked inside 3ds Max.
Do I need a separate licence for 3ds Max?
No. One AEC Pilot licence covers all eight applications on the same machine.
